#TCCBasketball lands on WBCA Honor Roll

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (July 19, 2017) – The Women’s Basketball Coaches Association announced its 2016-17 Academic Top 25 Team Honor Roll on Wednesday, and Tallahassee Community College made the list for the first time in school history.

Coach Franqua “Q” Bedell’s Eagles landed at No. 16 on the JC/CC honor roll with a cumulative 3.070 GPA for the Fall 2016 and Spring 2017 terms.

“It’s an honor and a pleasure to be recognized for this award,” said Bedell. “It’s something we pride ourselves in when talking about being a holistic program. To be successful both on the floor and in the classroom says a lot about the buy-in from our student-athletes.”

Bedell said the award was the by-product of a team effort from across the campus.

“(Assistant coach) Dee Dee Jernigan did a wonderful job of working with the student-athletes to help make this happen and, obviously, the student-athletes are the ones who got the job done.

“But you can’t be successful in the classroom without a strong academic advisor, and Joyce Thomas has done an excellent job with our students, and our faculty (at TCC) are second to none.”

In additional to junior and community colleges, the WBCA Academic Top 25 recognizes NCAA Division I, II and III and NAIA women’s basketball teams across the nation that carry the highest combined GPAs inclusive of all student-athletes on their rosters for the entire season. The 2016-17 marked the 22nd year in which the WBCA has announced an Academic Top 25.

This marks the second team academic award in 2016-17 for Bedell’s squad. Last week, the Eagles were named honorable mention by the NJCAA.
