Top Bird: Eagles soar past Hawks for 17th win
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (February 23, 2016) – NJCAA Region 8 No. 1 Tallahassee Community College won its 17th game of the season on Tuesday, defeating South Georgia State College 13-1 at Eagle Field.
Tallahassee, now 17-3 on the season, rolled up 16 hits offensively while a trio of pitchers limited the Hawks to just five hits and combined for 13 strikeouts.
Aided by the long ball, Tallahassee batted around in the third.
Myron Mebane led off the inning with a homer to right to give the Eagles a 3-0 lead. Later in the inning, the red-hot Silva got into the act with a grand slam – his team-leading fifth home run and third in the last five games.
That was more than enough run support for Terry, who delivered his second straight quality start.
The Hawks broke up Terry's shutout bid with a run in the fourth but offered little resistance otherwise. Terry (1-1) scattered four hits and two walks over six innings and struck out nine before handing things off to the bullpen.
With the bases loaded and nobody out, Nothdorft drew a bases-loaded walk to score Ethan Crout. The next three batters – pinch hitter Bryan Scheker, Cavanaugh and Silva – singled home runs. Then, with two outs, pinch hitter Chase Hahnemann singled home Scheker to compete the scoring.
Tallahassee received contributions from top to bottom in the batting order on Tuesday, led by Cavanaugh, who was 4-for-4.
Silva was 3-for-5 with five RBIs. Mebane was 2-for-3.
Tallahassee will wrap up a 13-game homestand this weekend when it hosts Chattahoochee Valley (Ala.) Community College. Game one is at 5 p.m. Friday.
