Eagles score late to beat ABAC

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (March 6, 2020) – A two-out error in the bottom of the eighth scored Andrew Fernandez with the go-ahead run and Tallahassee Community College held on for an 8-7 win over Abraham Baldwin (Ga.) Agricultural College on Friday afternoon at Eagle Field.

The win – No. 1001 for head coach Mike McLeod – improved the Eagles to 17-8 heading into Sunday's final Panhandle Conference tuneup against Black Hawk (Ill.) College-Moline.

Tallahassee overcame a 4-2 deficit to take a 7-4 lead through seven innings only to see ABAC rally for the second time in less than a week. Last Saturday, the Stallions turned a 9-0 deficit into a 10-9 victory. Today, they scored three runs in the top of the eighth to knot the game at 7-all.

In the bottom half, Fernandez drew a one-out walk, stole second and advanced to third on Corey Yawn's single. The next batter, Cyrus Grimes, reached on an error and Fernandez came home with what proved to be the winning run.

Despite allowing the tying run, Leighton Alley (2-0) was credited with the victory. Nolan Daniel pitched a scoreless ninth for his fifth save.

Yawn and Spencer Hanson had three hits each to lead the Eagles' 13-hit attack.

Tallahassee and Black Hawk will play a doubleheader on Sunday beginning at 1 p.m.
