Governors take two from Tallahassee

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (February 4, 2021) – Wallace (Ala.) Community College-Dothan swept a doubleheader from Tallahassee Community College in Thursday evening baseball action at Eagle Field.

The Governors took game one 16-4 then rallied for a 7-5 win in game two.

In game one, Wallace jumped on Tallahassee starter Dilan Lawson (0-2) for eight runs in the second. John Rodriguez' grand slam started the scoring, and the Governors added four more in the frame to chase Dawson.

Rodriguez added two more homers in the game and finished with seven RBI.

Tallahassee wasn't void of opportunities. The Eagles drew 12 walks, including four in the first inning, and loaded the bases in five of the seven innings, but couldn't dial up the timely hit. The result was 15 runners left on base.

Bacon (2-for-4) had two of the Eagles' three hits.

In the nightcap, Tallahassee staked starter Matt Cooper to a 4-0 lead through three innings, but Wallace rallied for the 7-5 victory.

Nick Vera's two-run homer put Tallahassee on the board in its first at-bat, and Bacon added a run-scoring single later in the inning.

Two innings later, the Eagles had runners at second and third with only one out twice but could only add one run. Jeissy De La Cruz scored on a wild pitch to extend the lead to 4-0.

Cooper was one out away from escaping the fourth with the shutout intact when Chaz Salter singled home Michael Brewer. Two more runs scored and Cooper exited with a 4-3 lead.

After Wallace tied the game in the fifth, Tallahassee answered with the go-ahead run in the bottom half. Lawson doubled to deep left-center, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on Spencer Hanson's single to center.

Wallace tied the game again in the sixth then broke a 5-all tie with two runs in the top of the seventh against Tanner Martin (0-1).

Lawson (2-for-3) and De La Cruz (2-for-4) had two hits apiece for Tallahassee.

Tallahassee will return to action Monday for a doubleheader against the Thomas (Ga.) University JV. The games, originally scheduled to be played at Thomas, have been moved to Eagle Field, and the teams' April doubleheader will be played in Thomasville, Ga.

Game one begins at 3 p.m. Monday.
