Chipola gets past Tallahassee, 5-2

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (April 14, 2021) – Chipola College's Luis Guerrero struck out 12 batters over eight innings and the Indians beat Tallahassee Community College, 5-2, on Wednesday evening in Panhandle Conference baseball action.

Tallahassee is now 17-27 (4-14 PC) with six games remaining in the 2021 season.

Chipola staked Guerrero to a 1-0 lead in its first at-bat and he made it hold up. The lead was 3-0 after Dylan Goldstein's two-run homer in the top of the fifth.

Tallahassee did all its scoring in the bottom half. With two outs and nobody on, Orlando Adams drew a walk and moved into scoring position on one of Guerrero's three wild pitches.

He scored on Julian Barcelo's single to left-center. After another wild pitched advanced Barcelo, he scored when shortstop Jozsef Rohrbacher couldn't handle a grounder off the bat of Trent Jeffcoat

The Indians returned the favor in the seventh. After a double play erased a leadoff single, three consecutive hits, including back-to-back doubles, plated a pair of runs to push the lead back to 5-2 and give Guerrero some breathing room.

Cedric DeGrandpre pitched a scoreless ninth for the save.

Matt Cooper (0-3) started for Tallahassee and allowed three runs and six hits over 4.2 innings. After Dylan Faulkner pitched two innings and allowed the runs in the seventh, Jacob Estes came on and pitched 2.1 scoreless innings of one-hit ball.

Jeffcoat was 1-for-4 with a double and RBI. Barcelo was 1-for-2 with a walk.

Tallahassee will open a two-game with Gulf Coast State College at 3 p.m. Friday in Panama City. The teams will play at Eagle Field at 2 p.m. Saturday.
