NICEVILLE, Fla. (February 2, 2013) - Tallahassee Community College cut a 17-point second half deficit to five with 2:37 left in the game but could get no closer and fell to NJCAA No. 11/FCSAA No. 3 Northwest Florida State College, 79-70, on Saturday evening in Panhandle Conference action.

Tallahassee (12-11) is now 0-7 in PC play, with the last three losses coming by single digits. Northwest Florida State (21-2) remains atop the league standings with a 7-1 record.

Tallahassee got within five points on two occasions, the second coming on a pair of free throws by Trevor McDade with 2:16 left in the game. But Northwest Florida State answered with six straight points to effectively seal the game.

McDade finished with a team-high 21 points. Curtis Diamond added 16.

 

Northwest Florida State's Chris Jones flirted with a triple-double, recording 23 points, nine rebounds and six assists. Elgin Cook added 22. 

 

Tallahassee dug itself out of an early 16-4 deficit with a 16-4 run of its own to tie the game at 20. Northwest Florida State eventually took a 27-25 lead to the half despite shooting just 18.5 percent (5-of-27) from the floor. 

 

The second half was vastly different for both squads. Tallahassee shot 53.6 percent (15-of-28) in the final 20 minutes, but was outscored 52-45 as the Raiders knocked down 16-of-26 (61.5 percent) field goal attempts. 

 

Northwest Florida State also connected on 18-of-23 free throws in the second half and enjoyed a 13-point advantage from the free throw line overall. 

 

Jonathan Hood's three-pointer with 17:16 left in the game gave Tallahassee its only lead of the night, 34-33. Northwest Florida State responded with an 11-3 run then later went on a 14-2 spurt to seize control and a 60-43 lead with 9:35 remaining. 

 

Tallahassee will look for its first PC victory of the season on Tuesday when it hosts Pensacola State College. Tip-off is at 7:30 p.m. and the game will be carried by Panhandle Sports Broadcasting at www.PSBlive.com.
