TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (February 16, 2016) – Behind a pair of solid performances in the circle, Tallahassee Community College swept a doubleheader from Santa Fe College on Tuesday, winning by the scores of 4-2 and 8-0.
Both teams entered play on Tuesday with .500 records – Tallahassee emerged with an 8-6 record while Santa Fe dropped to 5-7.
In the opener, lefty Raya Moncus went the distance in the 4-2 win. She allowed only three hits and two walks while striking out five.
The teams traded first-inning runs – Tallahassee scored on a sac-fly by Elisa Cecchetti – and the score remained tied until the third when a two-out error by Santa Fe led to a run.
The Eagles scored what proved to be the decisive runs in the sixth.
Madisen Blair started the rally with a one-out single then Alyssa NeSmith doubled to score Brooke Bates, who was running for Blair. A passed ball advanced NeSmith to third and she eventually scored on a stolen base to give Tallahassee a 4-1 lead.
Santa Fe scored an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth and went down in order in the seventh.
Both Cecchetti and NeSmith were 1-for-3 with a run scored and one driven in. Blair went 2-for-3 and Brooke Marendino was 2-for-4 and scored a run.
In game took, Alexandra Cook tossed a four-hit shutout in the Eagles' 8-0 win.
Tallahassee banged out 11 hits, led by Kristin Gunter, who was 3-for-3 with two RBIs. NeSmith was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs. Bates was 2-for-4 with three RBIs.
The Eagles scored two runs in the second and two more in the fourth then put the game away with a four-run seventh.
With the bases loaded and one out, NeSmith singled to center, scoring Khayreyah Parrish and Cecchetti. Casey Durham followed with an RBI-double to right and Bates' ground out plated NeSmith for the final run of the inning.
Cook walked only one and struck out six.
Tallahassee will return to play one week from today when it travels to St. Johns River State College for a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m.
