NWF State sweeps #TCCSoftball
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (March 16, 2016) - Leading 3-0 and just three outs from earning a split against nationally-ranked Northwest Florida State College, the Tallahassee Community College softball team surrendered a nine-run seventh inning and dropped game two of Wednesday's doubleheader 9-4.
Northwest Florida State picked up a 9-0 win in game one and improved to 28-3 on the season (2-0 Panhandle Conference). The Eagles, whose five-game winning streak was snapped on Wednesday, is now 14-12 (0-2).
In the nightcap, Tallahassee broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the sixth.
The Raiders answered in a big way in the seventh, sending 12 batters to the plate and scoring nine runs, including a two-run homer by Savannah Smathers.
The loss offset a solid outing by starting pitcher Raya Moncus who pitched into the seventh, allowing only three hits.
Alycia Smith went 2-for-4 and scored a run in the seventh for Tallahassee.
In the opener, the Raiders scored eight runs over the final four innings to turn a tight game into a 9-0, run-rule victory.
Tallahassee was poised to come to bat in the fourth trailing 1-0, but the Raiders, with 53 home runs on the season, used the long ball to swing the momentum.
With one on and two outs, Kristan Lizardi's single extended the inning and Tori Robinson followed with a three-run homer to give Northwest Florida State a 4-0 lead.
Down 5-0, Tallahassee threatened in fifth.
Northwest Florida State added four runs in the sixth and held Tallahassee scoreless in the bottom half to end the game.
NeSmith had the Eagles' only other game one hit.
In the circle, Alexandra Cook (8-5) took the loss.
Tallahassee is scheduled to travel to Chipola College on Saturday for a 2 p.m. eastern doubleheader, weather permitting.
