Campbell, da Silva lead Lady Eagles past Broward in Thanksgiving Classic
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (November 21, 2012) – Sophomore Jeraldine Campbell and freshman Sofia da Silva each recorded double-doubles to lead FCSAA No. 5 Tallahassee Community College past Broward College, 52-36, on day one at the TCC Basketball Thanksgiving Classic presented by G&G Caribbean Restaurant.
Campbell, in a reserve role, and da Silva, as a starter, each had 11 points and 12 rebounds for the Lady Eagles, who snapped a two-game losing streak to improve to 5-2.
Alexis Grant, the only other Lady Eagle in double-figures, led Tallahassee in scoring with 12 points.
Points were hard to come by on Wednesday evening, as neither team shot better than 25.0 percent from the floor. Tallahassee hit 17-of-68 (25.0 percent) and limited Broward to 13-of-63 (20.6 percent) shooting.
The teams shot a combined 15-of-73 in the first half and just 1-of-25 from long distance. Tallahassee was a little bit better, offensively, in the first 20 minutes and led 22-17 at the intermission.
The Lady Eagles gradually pulled away in the second stanza, outscoring the Seahawks, 30-19. Tallahassee aided its cause by winning the rebound battle, 56-48, and forcing 30 turnovers.
Broward's Hanna Kalenta pulled down a game-high 16 rebounds while Kiara Shoats was the only Seahawks player in double-figures with 11 points.
Tallahassee will continue play in the Thanksgiving Classic on Thursday when it hosts Miami Dade College at 5:30 p.m.
Miami Dade defeated Chattahoochee Valley (Ala.) Community College, 66-63, in Wednesday's first women's contest.
