Georgia Highlands halts Eagles’ winning streak

NICEVILLE, Fla. (December 16, 2015) – Tallahassee Community College had its eight-game winning streak snapped on Wednesday in a 69-66 loss to Georgia Highlands College on the final day of play at the Northwest Florida State College Winter Classic.

The Eagles last lost on November 17 at Santa Fe College. Georgia Highlands swept both games from Tallahassee and is responsible for half of the Eagles (11-4) four losses this season.

Tallahassee struggled to get things going offensively on Wednesday, managing only six first quarter points and trailed by ten (16-6) after the first ten minutes. The Eagles almost flipped the script entirely in the second quarter, outscoring the Chargers, 20-11, to pull within a point (27-26) at the half.

After both teams scored 22 points in the third quarter, Georgia Highlands took a 49-48 lead to the fourth.

Four players scored in double-figures for Tallahassee, led by Monique Calliste and Lindsay John, who scored 17 points apiece.

Lawriell Wilson added 16 and Sabrina Banks, 12.

The Eagles will break for the Christmas holiday then return to action Tuesday and Wednesday, December 29-30, at the Daytona State College Holiday Classic.

Eagles climb in NJCAA rankings

Prior to Wednesday's game, Tallahassee learned it had climbed four spots to No. 21 in the NJCAA Division I Women's Basketball Poll.

The Eagles made their 2015-16 poll debut last week, entering the rankings at No. 25.

Gulf Coast State College leads a quartet of teams in the top ten at No. 3. The Commodores are followed by No. 6 Chipola College, No. 7 Daytona State College and No. 10 Northwest Florida State College.

Next up is Tallahassee at No. 21 followed by No. 25 Florida State College at Jacksonville.

Those same six schools, in the same order, are ranked 1-6 in this week's NJCAA Region 8 Women's Basketball Coaches' Poll.
