Wilson's jumper gives Tallahassee last-second victory in PC opener

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (January 2, 2016) - Lawriell Wilson's driving jumper with 1.1 seconds left lifted NJCAA No. 21/FCSAA No. 5 Tallahassee Community College to a 67-65 win over FCSAA No. 9 Pensacola State College on Saturday evening in the Panhandle Conference opener for both teams.
Wilson's game-winning basket capped off a 26-point night and allowed Tallahassee (12-6, 1-0 PC) to snap a three-game losing streak while winning its PC opener for the second straight season.
Pensacola State is now 11-8 (0-1 PC).
Tallahassee overcame a dismal first-half shooting performance in which it shot just 8-of-41 (19.5 percent) from the floor. Despite the offensive struggles, the Eagles only trailed 34-24 at the intermission.
The second half was a different story as Tallahassee found its shooting touch and knocked down 16-of-32 field goal attempts.
The comeback was fueled by a 27-point third quarter, one that saw the Eagles outscore Pensacola State by 12 points and carry a 51-49 lead to the fourth.
The Eagles eventually led by as many as eight (60-52) but couldn't put away the Pirates.
Pensacola State forced a 65-all tie with 7.2 seconds remaining following a pair of free throws by Mercedes Suarez. After a Tallahassee timeout moved the ball into the front court, Wilson took the inbounds pass and delivered the game-winner.
Monique Calliste joined Wilson in double-figures for Tallahassee with 11 points. Eboni Watts finished with eight points and 12 rebounds.
Pensacola State led for virtually all of the first half, keyed by a 15-0 run that resulted in an 18-4 lead at the 3:31 mark of the first quarter.
Tallahassee returns to play on Wednesday when it travels to NJCAA No. 3/FCSAA No. 1 Gulf Coast State College. Tip-off is at 6:30 p.m.
