Eagle women fight valiantly but fall to No.3 Gulf Coast State

PANAMA CITY, Fla. (January 6, 2016) – Tallahassee Community College stayed within striking distance most of the game before falling to Gulf Coast State College, 77-64, on Wednesday evening in women's basketball action.

The loss evened the Eagles' (12-7) record in Panhandle Conference play at 1-1 while Gulf Coast State (16-0, 2-0) took the early lead in the league standings.

After an early ten-point deficit, Tallahassee trailed 22-17 after the first quarter and was poised to tie the game entering the final 90 seconds of the half but a turnover ignited an 8-0 Commodore run and put the Eagles in a ten-point hole. Lawriell Wilson stopped the bleeding with a three-pointer just before the second quarter buzzer to pull Tallahassee within 43-36 at the half.

The Eagles kept things close and trailed just 57-49 heading to the fourth but Gulf Coast State all but put the game away with a 9-0 run to start the quarter. Tallahassee was within eight (70-62) as late as the 5:30 mark but that's as close as it got.

Tallahassee was outrebounded 47-32, including 18-9 on the offensive glass, where Gulf Coast State delivered a 20-4 advantage in second chance points.

Eboni Watts led the Eagles with 18 points followed by Wilson with 13 and Lindsay John with 10.

Tallahassee will return to play on Saturday when it hosts defending national champion Chipola College at 5:30 p.m.
