After countless hours spent in the gym in preparation for the start of a new season, Head Coach Mercedes Corona was able to lead her team to a comfortable 78-61 opening night victory over Central Georgia Tech. Sarai Estupinan (G, Soph.) led the way with 18 points. Skylar Bailey (G, Fresh.), Danesha Boles (F, Soph.) and Za'Naria Robinson (F, Fresh.) added 10 points each.
Substitutions came early and often for Coach Corona, and by the end of the night all nine available players had entered the game. While some of the rotation was due to injury and foul trouble, Coach Corona was impressed with her entire bench on Tuesday. "Being able to rotate people and see them step up was definitely a relief." Taralyn Brown (F, Fr.) scored 9 points off the bench.
"It was a lot of fun to see a bunch of student athletes and other students," said Estupinan about the fan support on Tuesday evening. Estupinan was also pleasantly surprised to see her parents in the stands before the start of the game. They had not told her that they would be flying in from Texas to watch her first game in an Eagles' uniform.
The Eagles head to Jacksonville this weekend with games scheduled against Eastern Florida State and Santa Fe. They return home on Monday, November 21 to play Pearl River Community College. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:00 PM.
