Eagles top Blue Wave in defensive battle

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (December 9, 2022) - Points came at a premium in the Eagledome on Friday evening, but the TCC Women's Basketball came out on top in their rematch against FSC Jacksonville, winning 52-43. The win is the Eagles first, officially, after the team had to forfeit their opener against Central Georgia Tech.

"I think the hard work they've been putting in at practice is paying off," said head coach Mercedes Corona about her team's performance after the win. "They finally see it, the energy in the gym, I was proud of them."

The Eagles trailed 26-21 at halftime, but made a huge defensive stand in the third quarter, holding the Blue Wave to just six points and taking a seven point lead into the fourth quarter. More impressive defense and rebounding allowed TCC to grow their lead in the final period, finishing the game up 52-41.

"I didn't say anything different (at halftime), we just made some adjustments," said Corona about the second half comeback.

Jaidyn Trevino (G, Soph.) said the defensive improvements in the second half came from improved communication on the floor. "We talked," said Trevino, "A lot of us who don't usually talk on defense, like myself, but I was talking a lot on defense throughout the game."

FSC Jacksonville shot just 27.9% from the field. This comes less than one week after the two teams met in Gainesville where the Blue Wave beat the Eagles 63-62.

Danesha Boles (G/F, Soph.) finished with 15 points and 8 rebounds, and Trevino added 12 points, including two momentous three point shots that helped secure the win. Sarai Estupinan (G, Soph.) and Skylar Bailey (G, Fresh.) were the main distributors, each tallying six assists in the game.

Next weekend the team heads to Panama City to compete in the Gulf Coast State College Classic, where they'll face Central Georgia Tech for the second time this season. In the first matchup, the Eagles outscored the Titans 78-62 before having to forfeit.
