Eagle men return to Peach State for weekend games

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (November 13, 2014) – Tallahassee Community College men's basketball head coach Eddie Barnes hopes his team's second trip to the state of Georgia is as successful as the first.

Last week, the Eagles traveled to Gordon State College and picked up a hard-fought 86-82 overtime victory against the Highlanders. Friday evening, it's back to the Peach State for the first of two games at the Applebee's Okefenokee Classic, hosted by South Georgia State College in Waycross, Ga.

Tallahassee will face South Georgia Technical College (4-2) at 6 p.m. Friday and host South Georgia State (4-0) at 4 p.m. Saturday.

Since the win at Gordon State, the Eagles defeated St. Petersburg College to improve to 4-0 and, on Tuesday, ascended to the No. 1 ranking in the FCSAA Men's Basketball Coaches' Poll.

Defending Florida's top ranking won't be easy for Tallahassee. Both South Georgia State (No. 2) and South Georgia Tech (No. 4) were ranked inside the top five of the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association's (GCAA) men's basketball preseason poll. Not to mention two of South Georgia Tech's four victories have come against defending Panhandle Conference and FCSAA state champion Chipola College.

If the season's first two weeks are any indication, expect both games to be high scoring.

Tallahassee is averaging 104.2 points through four games while South Georgia State is just slightly better at 106.8 points per game. And while South Georgia State is only scoring 81.0 points per game, the Jets knocked down 20 three-pointers in Tuesday's 96-93 win over Chipola.

Eagle Basketball Game Notes

Tallahassee is 9-1 all-time against South Georgia Tech and has won the last two meetings. The teams last faced one another on December 1, 2009, in Tallahassee…South Georgia College recently consolidated with Waycross College and was renamed South Georgia State College. Men's basketball competes at South Georgia State's Waycross campus. Tallahassee won its only meetings against South Georgia (11/2/94) and Waycross (12/30/11), but this will be the Eagles' first contest against the South Georgia State Hawks…Tallahassee and South Georgia State own victories against Faith Baptist Prep Academy. The Eagles won 119-56 while South Georgia State claimed a 127-54 victory…a pair of wins would give Tallahassee its first 6-0 start since the 2006-07 season.
