HOME OF THE TALLAHASSEE COMMUNITY COLLEGE EAGLES

Pair of Region 8 foes await Lady Eagles in Marianna

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (November 7, 2012) - Tallahassee Community College's women's basketball team will resume play on Thursday evening at the Collegiate Girls Basketball Report Classic, a three-day event held in Marianna, Fla., and hosted by Chipola College.

FCSAA No. 3 Tallahassee, 2-0 on the very young season, will match up against a pair of fellow top ten foes, beginning with No. 6 Santa Fe College (3-0) at 6 p.m. eastern Thursday. Following an off day on Friday, Tallahassee will face No. 7 St. Petersburg College (1-1) at 6 p.m. Saturday.

Thursday's contest will feature a pair of teams who are off to promising starts on the heels of a disappointing 2011-12 campaign. Both Tallahassee (11-15) and Santa Fe (9-21) struggled to last place conference finishes in 2012, but through the first week of the season, those records seem like a distant memory.

Tallahassee scored two wins at last weekend's Tallahassee Democrat Tip-off Classic, defeating Albany (Ga.) Technical College by 14 and Central Georgia Technical College by 30. Meanwhile, Santa Fe posted wins by 45 (over Palm Beach State College) and 12 points (over Miami Dade College) in its own season-opening classic before dropping Brevard Community College, 88-83, on Tuesday evening.

Tallahassee head coach Teresa Atkinson had to be encouraged after watching her squad on opening weekend. In wins over Albany Tech and Central Georgia Tech, seven different players, including five true freshmen, scored in double-figures. None of the seven, even a pair of second-year players, dressed in a Lady Eagles uniform last season.
Sophomore Jeraldine Campbell, who averaged 21.5 points in the two wins, transfered to Tallahassee after playing her freshman season at East Mississippi Community College. Sophomore Alexis Grant missed all of the 2011-12 season rehabbing a serious knee injury sustained as a freshman with Tallahassee in January 2011.

Former Rickards High School standout Tyeshia Guinnie scorched the nets for 24 points on 6-of-8 three-pointers in Saturday's win over Central Georgia Tech.

Tallahassee will have a small measure of revenge on its mind when it plays St. Petersburg on Saturday. The Lady Titans came into the Bill Hebrock Eagledome last December and handed Tallahassee a one-point loss. It will be the first of two meetings between the teams this season.

Tallahassee will travel to St. Petersburg on December 7.

FCSAA Poll Update

Tallahassee climbed one spot in this week's Florida College System Activities Association (FCSAA) Women's Basketball Coaches' Poll and shares the No. 3 ranking with Panhandle Conference rival Chipola College.

The Lady Eagles were ranked No. 4 in the preseason poll but moved into a share of the No. 3 ranking following a pair of season-opening wins at the Tallahassee Democrat Tip-off Classic.

Panhandle Conference schools hold down the top five spots in the poll, led by Gulf Coast State College. Northwest Florida State College, the NJCAA's preseason No. 1 team, is ranked No. 2. Reigning NJCAA Region 8 Champion Pensacola State College is No. 5.

Santa Fe College and St. Petersburg College, the next two opponents on Tallahassee's schedule, lead the second half of the poll. Indian River State College, new to this week's rankings, is ranked eighth. Daytona State College is No. 9, followed by Palm Beach State College and Hillsborough Community College, who share the No. 10 ranking.

The next FCSAA Women's Basketball Coaches' Poll will be released on Tuesday. The NJCAA's first regular season poll will be released Wednesday.
