Stepping Stones: Nakiah Black, Toledo
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (July 16, 2018) – Tallahassee Community College women's basketball standout Nakiah Black has signed a national letter of intent with Toledo University.
Black, a native of Concord, N.C., graduated in May with designs on foregoing her final three years of eligibility. A change of heart became official on Saturday when Toledo head coach Tricia Cullop announced the signing of the 5-foot-10 guard.
"We're extremely excited to have Nakiah join our program," Cullop told UTrockets.com. "She's a talented guard who can play multiple positions. Nakiah has three-point range, the quickness to get to the basket and the strength to post up. She's also a terrific defender and a proven winner. In addition to being a talented basketball player, Nakiah is a great person with outstanding leadership ability."
After sitting out the 2016-17 season due to injury, Black made her collegiate debut this past season and eventually led Tallahassee to the NJCAA Division I National Championship. She averaged 17.8 points in five games at the national tournament, including a 31-point effort in the Eagles' tourney opener against Western Nebraska Community College, and was named to the all-tournament team.
Combined with the two games Tallahassee played in the NJCAA Region 8/FCSAA State Tournament, Black scored a postseason school record 121 points in seven games (17.3 ppg). She also broke a postseason record with eight assists in the Eagles' national semifinal win over Gulf Coast State College and tied the school's postseason mark with 12 free throw attempts in the win vs. Western Nebraska.
For the season, Black averaged 14.1 points, 3.5 rebounds and 2.2 assists for the season and was named First-team All-Panhandle Conference.
Located in Toledo, Ohio, the Rockets play as a member of the Mid-American Conference.
