#TCCWXC gears up for regular season finale

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (October 21, 2016) – Tallahassee Community College's women's cross country team will run its final regular season event on Saturday morning, the sixth annual Run for Lawson 5K.

The event is scheduled for a 9 a.m. start at Holy Comforter Episcopal School.

The Run for Lawson honors Tallahassee teen Lawson Mayfield, who passed suddenly from bacterial meningitis in 2009. Proceeds from Saturday's event support the National Meningitis Association and contributes to raising local awareness about bacterial meningitis prevention.

Saturday will be especially meaningful for Tallahassee head coach Gary Droze, who coached Mayfield at Maclay School. The Eagles were originally scheduled to travel to Avon Park, Fla., for an invitational hosted by South Florida State College but after the event was cancelled he locked the Eagles into the annual community race.

According to Droze, Saturday will also help determine the Eagles' final roster spots at next month's NJCAA Division I Cross Country Championships in El Dorado, Kan.

Five of the seven roster spots are all but locked up – Samantha Reilly, Mia Wiederkehr, Ashley Jones, Monet Madeux and Ellie Stubblefield – meaning four runners – Jeanna Prisco, Regan Ward, Clover Carithers and Jasmine Green – are battling for the final two coveted spots.

The Eagles are coming off a fifth-place finish in the College Division of the FSU Invitational on October 7. Seven Eagles posted personal records at the event, led by Samantha Reilly, who set another school record in the 5K with a time of 20:51.7.

Saturday is Tallahassee's final race before the inaugural Region 8/FCSAA Cross Country Championship on Friday, November 4 at Apalachee Regional Park.
