Stepping Stones: Deion Bute, Central Connecticut State

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (July 13, 2017) – Tallahassee Community College men’s basketball standout Deion Bute has signed a national letter of intent with Central Connecticut State University. 

Bute, a six-foot-eight center, is one of three junior college signees in this year’s class for Blue Devils’ head coach Donyell Marshall, whose 15-year NBA career began when he was the No. 4 overall pick by the Minnesota Timberwolves in the 1994 NBA Draft. 

For Bute, the road to the New Britain, Conn., campus was an unconventional one, at best. When he arrived on the Tallahassee campus from the island of St. Maarten in the fall of 2014, the game of basketball was not in the picture. 

In fact, it wasn’t until the following summer when Bute asked for and was given the opportunity to work out with the Eagles by then-new head coach Mark White. Bute impressed, earned a roster spot as a walk-on and eventually a scholarship for his sophomore season in 2016-17. 

Bute more than held his own in the rugged Panhandle Conference, averaging 7.9 points, 6.6 rebounds and 1.8 blocks in 61 career games while shooting 55.1 percent from the floor. 

As a freshman, he was named Second-team All-Panhandle Conference and earned a spot on the FCSAA All-Tournament Team, averaging 13.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and 2.0 blocks while leading the Eagles’ to the championship game. 

Bute also enjoyed success academically while at TCC. He was an honors student and earned all-academic honors by the Panhandle Conference in 2016. 

Central Connecticut State is a member of the Northeast Conference.
